Cushion-Stop tanks available for low demand periods

SP systems are pre-assembled and pre-wired units which provide steady water pressure in buildings having varying water demand and variable street pressure.

The system includes close-coupled pumps, control valves, a temperature purge valve, copper suction and discharge headers, header pressure gauges, lag pump pressure control, pump isolation valves, a steel base, and a control panel (the panel comprises a fusible disconnect switch and magnetic starter for each pump motor, selector switches, pilot lights, a manual transfer switch, transformers, holding circuits and time delay relays).

Operation of the systems is as follows:

Simplex System: The pump operates continuously to satisfy the water demand.

Duplex System: The lead pump operates continuously to satisfy the water demand. When required, the lag pump is automatically started to run in parallel with the lead pump until the water demand drops again. The lag pump will then shut down. Lead and lag pumps are manually alternated.

Triplex Type A System: The first pump operates continuously to satisfy the water demand. When required, the second pump and then the third pump are automatically started to run in parallel with the first pump until the water demand drops again. The second and third pumps will then shut down. Pump sequence is manually alternated.

Triplex Type B System: A small capacity jockey pump operates continuously to satisfy the water demand. When required, the first main pump and then the second main pump are automatically started to run in parallel with the jockey pump until the water demand drops again. The main pumps will then shutdown. Sequence of the main pumps is manually alternated.

MODIFICATIONS AND ACCESSORIES
• 24-hour automatic alternation of lead pump.
• Alarm bell, silencer button and indicating light, plus cut-out circuit for high and low suction pressure and/or high and low system pressure.
• Flexible connectors for the ends of the headers and/or vibration rails for installation under the system base.
• Modified control panels and motor enclosures.
• Cushion-Stop tanks to shut down the lead pump during periods of low water demand.

SP CONTROL VALVES
Federal SP control valves perform the following functions:
(1) Automatically reduce a higher inlet pressure to a steady lower downstream pressure, regardless of changing flow rate.
(2) Act as a check valve by preventing return flow when pressure reverses.
(3) Provide dampening action to eliminate pulsation caused by low flow rates.

The valves are of cast iron construction with bronze trim, and have an adjustable pressure range of 30-300 psig. 125# rated valves are standard but 250# rated valves are available if required. Maximum temperature rating is 180°F. The valve pressure setting is easily adjusted in the field with ordinary working tools.

SP PUMP AND MOTOR UNITS
Type SP water pressure systems are built with Federal Type CC, CG and CK close-coupled, bronze-fitted, end suction, centrifugal pumps. Pumps are back pull-out style with center-line discharge, and are fitted with leakless mechanical shaft seals. They are driven by standard JM type close-coupled pump motors.

SP CUSHION-STOP TANKS
SP systems can be furnished with a Cushion-Stop tank plus the circuitry required to shut off the lead pump. The tank is mounted on the same base as the pumps, and is furnished with all required piping, valves and controls. The tanks have a sealed inert flexible water chamber to separate the water and the air, and, therefore, no periodic recharging is necessary.

The standard Cushion-Stop tank has an 80 gallon nominal capacity and is rated for 150 psi maximum working pressure. Tanks with 125#, 175# and 250# ratings, tanks larger than the standard size and tanks with ASME labels are also available, if specified. The Cushion-Stop tank provides a cushion against leakage loss in the building and storage capacity for small water demand periods. They are, therefore, recommended for schools, office buildings, etc., with very low night-time and weekend water usage.

DETERMINING THE SP SYSTEM GPM RATING:
The total GPM rating of the SP system can be determined by using the fixture flow unit and conversion tables shown below.

TO DETERMINE SP PUMP GPM RATING:
SIMPLEX SYSTEM: The pump should be rated for the full system GPM.
DUPLEX SYSTEM: Each of the two pumps should be rated for 70% of the system GPM.
TRIPLEX TYPE A SYSTEM: Each of the three pumps should be rated for 45% of the system GPM.
TRIPLEX TYPE B SYSTEM: Each of the two main pumps should be rated for 50% of the system GPM and the jockey pump should be rated for 25% of the system GPM.

TO DETERMINE PUMP HEAD:
(Total Dynamic Head Expressed in Feet)
(1) Vertical distance between pump and highest fixture.
(2) Plus friction loss through the piping system.
(3) Plus the pressure required at the highest fixture.
(4) Plus 10-ft. friction loss through the SP system.
(5) Less the minimum suction head available.
(PSI x 2.31 = Feet of Head.      Feet of head x .433 = PSI.)

Notes:
1.  Do not use dimensions for construction purposes unless certified.
2.  All dimensions are in inches unless otherwise noted.
3.  For dimensions of simplex systems, refer to ABC Electric Corp.
(4).  The 'G' dimension varies with the pump size, motor size and control valve size. Refer to ABC Electric Corp.
5.  Standard systems have suction coming in from the right and discharge going out to the right, facing the front of the system, as shown in the drawing above. The suction and/or discharge can be furnished on the left is so specified.
