Roof Tank House Pump Systems

Bulletin 259A

Suggested Specifications for Architects and Engineers

Furnish and install, as shown on plans, a Federal Pump Corporation Duplex Type FIT Roof Tank House Pump System. Pumps shall be rated as shown in the pump schedule.

Pumps shall be close-coupled, bronze-fitted, ball bearing, end suction, centrifugal type. Pumps shall have cast iron, back pull-out style casing with flanged suction and discharge connections, centerline discharge for automatic venting, enclosed bronze balanced impeller, bronze wearing ring, bronze shaft sleeve, mechanical shaft seal and copper by-pass line into the seal chamber.

If horizontally split case pumps are preferred to close-coupled pumps, delete the preceding paragraph and add the following paragraph in its place:

Pumps shall be horizontally split case, centrifugal, with cast iron casing the upper half of which shall be removable without disconnecting suction or discharge piping. Pumps shall have enclosed, bronze balanced impellers, bronze wearing rings, alloy steel shaft, bronze shaft sleeves, inboard and outboard ball bearings in moisture-proof housings, plus a mechanical shaft seal on each side of the impeller. Each pump shall be single-stage (or two-stage), connected to its motor by a horsepower-rated flexible coupling and mounted on a structural steel base.

Furnish and install a vibration rail set for each pump, with top and bottom members separated by rubber-in-shear isolators to prevent metal-to-metal contact and provide uniform structural support and vibration absorption.

Furnish and install a Fed-flex stainless steel braided hose connection with threaded ends for the suction and discharge connection of each pump. Suction hose connections shall be the same size as the pump suction size. Discharge hose connections shall be one pipe size larger than the pump discharge size.

Furnish and install in the roof tank, two float switches for on-off control of the pumps and one float switch for high-and-low water alarm actuation. Each switch shall be mercury tube type with a weatherproof cast aluminum enclosure and mounting pedestal.

Furnish and install a duplex wall-mounting control panel in a NEMA-1 general purpose enclosure including therein two fused disconnect switches (specify circuit breakers in lieu of fused disconnect switches if motors are 20 HP or larger), two magnetic starters, two hand-off-automatic selector switches, an automatic alternator to alternate the cycles of operation of the two pumps and also provide simultaneous operation, if required, and a high-and-low water alarm section with 4" bell, indicating light for each alarm condition and a silencing button in the panel cover. All panel components shall be interwired and rated for the motor horsepower and voltage.

If a factory-assembled Roof Tank House Pump System is preferred to a system for jobsite assembly (available only with close-coupled pumps), add the following paragraph to the specification:

The two pumps and the control panel shall be factory-assembled on a single structural steel base. Factory pre-piping shall include a check valve for each pump discharge, an isolation valve for each pump suction and discharge connection and copper suction and discharge headers. A pressure gauge shall be furnished for each header. The control panel shall be mounted on the unit base and factory-wired to the motors. Furnish and install a vibration rail set, as described above, for installation under the unit base (in lieu of under each pump). Furnish a stainless steel hose connection, as described above, for installation on the ends of the suction and discharge headers (in lieu of the suction and discharge connections of the pumps). The entire unit shall be factory tested, hydraulically and electrically, prior to shipment.

Furnish and install, as shown on plans, a Federal Pump Corporation Duplex Type RT Roof Tank House Pump System. Pumps shall be rated as shown in the pump schedule.

Pumps shall be horizontally split case, centrifugal, with cast iron casing, the upper half of which shall be removable without disconnecting suction or discharge piping. Pumps shall have enclosed, single piece, cast bronze impellers, renewable bronze wearing rings, alloy steel shaft, bronze shaft sleeves, inboard and outboard ball bearings mounted in moisture-proof housings, plus a mechanical shaft seal on each side of the impeller. Each pump and motor shall be connected by a horsepower-rated flexible coupling and mounted on a structural steel base.

Furnish and install a vibration rail set for each pump and motor, with the top and bottom members separated by rubber-in-shear isolators to prevent metal-to-metal contact and provide uniform structural support and vibration absorption.

Furnish and install a stainless steel braided hose connection for the suction and discharge connection of each pump, of the size shown in the pump schedule.

Furnish and install in the roof tank, two float switches for on-off control of the pumps and one float switch for high water and low water alarm actuation. Each switch shall be mercury tube type with a weatherproof cast aluminum enclosure and mounting pedestal. Furnish a high water and low water alarm panel with 4" alarm bell, indicating light for each condition and silencing button.

Furnish and install a duplex wall-mounting control panel in NEMA-1 general purpose enclosure including therein two fusible disconnect switches, two magnetic starters, two hand-off-automatic selector switches and an automatic pump alternator to alternate the cycles of operation of the two house pumps and also provide simultaneous two-pump operation if required. All control panel components shall be mounted inside the panel, interwired and rated for applicable motor horsepower and voltage.
